The South Tyne Trail follows the course of the former Haltwhistle to Alston railway, operational from 1851/2 to 1976. Cyclists following National Cycle Network route 68 (Pennine Cycleway) can also divert along this section in order to view the Lambley Viaduct but have to retrace their passage to cross the River South Tyne by road. The old buffer stop at Coanwood Station can be seen on the right.
