Class 769 at Heath Junction

The first test run of a Transport-for-Wales class 769 unit outside of the confines of Cardiff Canton depot is seen at Heath Junction. Two return runs to Rhymney had been planned for the day, but this is the further north that the unit, No. 769008, ever reached, failing on the climb from Cardiff Queen Street station to Heath High Level on the first run. It managed to creep to Heath Junction, where it reversed on the crossing, before proceeding slowly back to its shed. Transport for Wales is taking delivery of a few of these units - originally built in the late 1980s as dual-voltage class 319 units, but now refurbished and freshly equipped with diesel engines - and is planning to use them on Penarth-Rhymney services.
