The Rose and Crown on Newgate Street in Newcastle is dwarfed by its neighbours, but has proved a real survivor. Originally, it was built as an infill beside the Empire Theatre to its right in 1914, and designed by Benjamin Simpson. The theatre was replaced in 1969 by the Swallow Hotel complex, which in turn was replaced by the Maldron Hotel in 2019, but the pub survived all this demolition and is still going strong.
