Built in 1934-5, designed in Modernist style by Erich Mendelsohn, who had won a competition opened by the 9th Earl De La Warr. It was refurbished in 1992-5 and 1997-2005. Grade I listed - see www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1352840.
