On the south side of the Amber Taverns pub at 11 Orchard Street in Neath town centre. Previously Neath Constitutional Club, the Allan Leonard Lewis VC opened here in October 2017. The name honours Allan Leonard Lewis VC (1895–1918) who was a posthumous recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for British and Commonwealth forces for gallantry in the face of the enemy. On September 21st 1918 at Rossnoy near Lempire in France, Lance-Corporal Lewis was killed while getting his men under cover from heavy machine-gun fire. Lewis was born at Whitney-on-Wye, Herefordshire. At the outbreak of the Great War in August 1914 he was employed by the Great Western Railway as a bus driver in Neath.
