Memorial to a sad story

This obelisk was erected to the memory of Hazelton Robert Robson. On 5th September 1876 a small child slipped into the Luggie Water close to this spot. Robson, aged 17, was one of those who rushed to help. He ran downstream and, attached to a clothes rope, jumped into the river and managed to catch hold of the child. While being pulled back to the side, the rope snapped and both child and would-be rescuer were washed downstream and drowned. The inscription reads: ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION TO THE MEMORY OF HAZELTON ROBERT ROBSON OF GLASGOW AGED 17 YEARS WHO DURING A HEAVY FLOOD IN THE LUGGIE AND WHILE NOBLY ENDECOURING TO SAVE THE LIFE OF A LITTLE CHILD WAS DROWNED NEAR THIS PLACE ON 5TH SEPTEMBER 1876 HIS REMAINS ARE INTERED IN THE GLASGOW NECROPOLIS
