This is a beautiful example of continental engine building practice and was one of several engines imported into the UK that were made by Carel Frères of Ghent, Belgium. This example was built in 1904 and is a cross compound with drop valve cylinders measuring 610 & 955 mm bores x 1500 mm stroke. It developed 750 horsepower and the drive was by ropes. It ran 24/7 through WWII and was finally stopped in 1973. It is preserved by the owners and can be demonstrated on an electric motor drive.
