The Dutch River carries the water of the River Don. The name originates due to a massive realignment of its course in the 1600's, engineered by the Dutch-born Cornelius Vermuyden. The River Don used to flow into the River Trent but by the work done it now joins the River Ouse at Goole. At this stretch, the river is tidal.
