The Salisbury Arms occupies a site used as a pub since at least the fifteenth century; at that time the pub was called the Bell, giving its name to Bell Lane that runs up the side of the site. The Cecil family (later Gascoyne-Cecil) have been major landowners in the area since Elizabethan times: Sir Robert Cecil (1563-1612), Lord Privy Seal under Elizabeth I and James I/VI, became Earl of Salisbury and the title was later upgraded to Marquess of Salisbury.
