According to Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McMullen%27s_Brewery , McMullen's was founded in 1827 by the son of a Scottish nurseryman; that connection presumably explains the reference to McMullen's as seed merchants on one of the buildings in the town. (This building can be seen at Image) The firm was originally based on Railway Street, moving to Mill Bridge in 1832 and to this site at Old Cross in 1891.
