The old abattoir, which was extensive, was opened in 1845. There is a picture of it at http://viewfinder.english-heritage.org.uk/search/detail.asp?calledFrom=oai&imageUID=15970 The building caught fire on 7th December 2007 - see http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0100news/0100regionalnews/tm_headline=huge-fire-destroys-former-abattoir&method=full&objectid=20229041&siteid=50061-name_page.html The inscription on the fountain reads "THESE ABATTOIRS WERE OPENED BY W.LAIRD ESQ. J.P. MAYOR OF BIRKENHEAD"
