A side room adjacent to the main bar, where diners can await their table, couples murmur and loiterers like myself loiter. This stag is the centrepiece. Both compelling and disquieting at the same time, he makes his presence felt. This is the closest many of us will ever get to such a beast. His proportions were mesmerising; little smaller than a cow his mouth and eyes were fascinating to study. Poor old chap, I expect he would have liked to remain roaming free but his lot was to end up gracing a pub. My respect for the wild creatures of the forest is renewed anyway.
