This sign must puzzle a few modern day visitors to Ruswarp. It was an instruction to United Automobile Services bus drivers before tackling the fearsome hill out of the village. It is reminiscent of a lost age when regional bus companies were a vital pillar of the economy but their vehicles were primitive by today's standards. Buses still run this way but they are nowadays operated by Arriva and have automatic gear boxes (rather than the crash gear boxes of old). Nevertheless it is splendid to see that this delightful period piece has survived.
