Now a cyclepath, the Leicester - Swannington railway operated from 1832 to 1966 and was designed by Robert Stephenson. It was an early example of railway construction, built to transport coal. The plaque commemorates the route. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leicester_and_Swannington_Railway for further information.
