A statement of the prestige of co-operative societies in the first half of the 20th century. Although appearing to be a single build, only the section up to the clock tower featured when the building was opened in 1939, the further section not being added until 1963. An impressive piece of Art Deco architecture. At this end the now closed Co-operative Bank branch, the further end occupied by Beale's department store.
