Grade II Listed former late 16th or early 17th century coaching inn, now a public house. In 1753 it was referred to as the King's Arms and in 1783 The Bedford Inn. One source dates the inn to 1600. Celia Fiennes found ‘very indifferent accommodations’ when she passed through the town in 1695. It seems Market Place was previously Fore Street and, in my directories, I find; 1830 George Arnall; 1844 Thomas Solomon; 1852 William Budge; 1856 Mark Hawken; 1873 Mrs Elizabeth Courts; 1883-1893 William Tonkin; 1897 no Mason's Arms but there is William Roose at the King's Arms; 1902 Albert Carlyon (& saddler); 1906 Henry Letcher; 1914 John Wilkins.
