Newtown School which opened in 1906 was not the first school in this small community. In 1835, a Private Adventure School was established in Bute Town by John Evans who had lost an arm in an accident at the ironworks. After the school seen here closed in the 1990s it was converted to a community hall. It is now (2019) a private residence. Bute Town children now attend schools in Rhymney.
