2-4 Cotman Road - Irstead House

This early 19th century house, together with its neighbour at 4 Cotman Road, is Grade 2 listed. It was originally built in 1820, and significantly remodelled in the Italianette style in 1873. The south facade has a central door surrounded by a porch with brick sunk panels, a moulded semi-circular arch with impost mouldings and a masonry keystone. The balcony above has a pierced stone balustrading. Its owner in the late 1880s was IB Geldart, who has been described as 'the mainstay of Norfolk Botany during the latter part of the 19th century', who established a botanical library and a herbarium, which was continued by his daughter Alice (1862-1942.) Unfortunately there is now little left of the fine gardens he created.
