The sole passenger alights at Ongar from a train from Epping on London Transport's Central Line. Ongar station was opened in 1865 by the Great Eastern Railway. It was taken over by London Transport in 1949 but continued to be served by a shuttle service of steam trains from Epping (hired from British Railways Eastern Region) until 1957 when the line was electrified, much expense having to be incurred on the provision of bridges where before level crossings had sufficed. The line still only had a shuttle service, and patronage was so poor that latterly only a few rush-hour trains ran on Mondays to Fridays with no weekend service. Complete closure followed in 1994, and now the line is in the possession of a preservation society, which, of course, means that it will never again become part of London's transport system.
