Thornton Junction was a central interchange for the Fife coalfield. Situated on the main line between Edinburgh and Dundee, it was the junction for the Fife coast line via Leven and also a line to Dunfermline. Old maps suggest that it was purely an interchange station with no pedestrian access. It closed in 1969. The loco is one of Reid's S-class 0-6-0 freight locos of 1914 for the North British Railway, later classed as J37.
