The traffic lights are for a comparatively recent link road that was eventually built after security restrictions were placed on vehicles including public service buses using some internal airport roads. This, for a period, meant a really silly route was taken by southbound buses calling or starting at the North Terminal, where they went north up the A23 to the A217/A23 roundabout and then south again. The North/South Terminal shuttle train route crosses on the viaduct beyond the lights.
