The canal was opened in 1805 but closed in 1854 so that the Great North of Scotland Railway could lay tracks along its course. There is supposedly a canal milepost in the vicinity, but I could not locate it: https://canmore.org.uk/site/215409/aberdeenshire-canal-milepost-16-port-elphinstone .
