A view downstream from the old road bridge along this tiny river which has a rather odd course. It begins life near Mount Grace Priory on the edge of the Cleveland Hills and meanders its way north westwards and then west to a point within 3km of the Tees, which is flowing in the opposite direction, before turning south near Birkby to run almost unnoticed all the way down to the Swale a mile to the south of Kirby Wiske. One has to assume that its course has been determined by glacial deposits across the Vale of Mowbray which have blocked a more likely course towards the Tees.
