Looking rather unexceptional these days, the gateway was the entrance to the original Midland Railway station of 1839, designed by William Parsons in Greek Revival style, and is the only surviving element of this. The main gates have been lost, but one cast iron gate survives in the side passage to the left http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6051870 . Listed Grade II.
