Clayton Hall is a rare example of a moated, medieval site. It has managed to survive in a place that has seen many changes during the 900 years or so since it was built, for the Clayton family, in the 12 Century. After passing through the hands of the Byron family, of which Lord Byron was a member it was acquired by the Chetham family. Humphrey Chetham founded Chetham's School and Library in the centre of Manchester. The righthand side of the building here dates from the 16th Century. SJ88149853.
