The name of the church is after Luke 4:18 "To set at liberty them that are bruised" http://www.libertychurchlondon.org.uk/ . The building, which dates from 1910, was originally the Premier Electric cinema. In the early 1930s, its name was shortened to just the Premier. In 1938, the art deco frontage was built, and the cinema re-named the Regal. In 1959 it was re-named again as the Essoldo. In late 1963 the building was used as a bingo hall, but in early 1964, it re-opened as the Curzon cinema. It closed in 1989 and re-opened in 1990 as a game centre. By 1996 it was being used by the Church of Destiny. In 1997 it re-opened as the New Curzon cinema, screening Bollyood films. When it closed in early 2003, it was the UK's oldest operating cinema.
