The inscription above the water fountain reads "Presented to the parish of Hornsey by Maria Hawes Ware 1863". In the 1830's Maria Hawes Ware profited from the abolition of slavery. Her late husband had been a significant slave owner in British Guiana and after a legal battle, like many other slave owners, she was awarded handsome compensation by the British government.
