According to legend, Sir Thomas Surtees, a member of the family who once owned Redworth, fought alongside Edward, Prince of Wales, (The Black Prince) in 1346 and saved his life. In gratitude, the Prince of Wales allowed the Surtees family to display the Prince of Wales emblem.
