The church is tucked away from storms in a sheltered, woody setting. There has been a church here since the 6th century, founded by St Gwynhoedl. Like St Beuno of Clynnog Fawr, he was a senior cleric in the early Welsh church. As with so many churches on the pilgrim route to Bardsey, St Gwynhoedl's is far larger than any resident population could have needed. It was almost entirely rebuilt in the early 16th century as a large, virtually square space divided by two arcades.
