This site was acquired in 1919 by the rector of Streatham and other trustees of the local war memorial committee. It passed to London County Council in 1922 and to the Borough of Lambeth in 1971. The memorial at its centre is topped by a bronze statue of a soldier sculpted by Alfred T. Loft.
