One of several narrow steep lanes off the High Street, in this case descending to Market Street close by the North Bridge. In the early 19th century both fish- and fleshmarkets were held below North Bridge. 'Fleshmarket Close' is also a title of one of Ian Rankin's novels in the Inspector Rebus series.
