"Save the 8th" refers to the 8th amendment to the Irish constitution which hitherto baned abortion in the Irish Republic. People in Northern Ireland did not have a vote but in the poll over 66% of voters in the Republic favoured the abolition of the amendment. Newry is a border town and overwhelmingly Catholic with much daily commuting of workers and shoppers from the Republic.
