At the time the building had been Grade 2 listed (including its walls, gate piers and gates) it was known as the Church of Christ Scientist. It was built in 1934/5 by Herbert G Ibberson with buff-coloured brick and has slate roofs with parapeted gable ends in the Arts and Crafts and Modern styles. The east gable end fronting the street (Recorder Road) has a tall lancet window tieh a pointed ogee arch formed from cut bricks with a weathered slate sill and a large stone inscription below, which has since been covered over by a panel bearing the current name of the church.
