Looking down the length of lower Farndale, here a narrow, well wooded valley with no road along the bottom. In the middle distance, and near the centre of the photo is the flat top of the Tabular Hills above The Nab. This marks the change from the sandstones and shales of the moors to the limestones of the Tabular Hills, and from poor quality farmland to lighter soils often suitable for cereal production. The gap to the right of The Nab marks the southward extension of Farndale, which becomes Douthwaite Dale once south of Lowna.
