The box was built by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in 1922 and closed recently (c.2015 - I have not found the exact date). It controlled the curves between this Southport-Wigan line and the Liverpool-Preston line that can be seen crossing in the distance. The south curve started off to the right almost opposite the box and closed in 1982; the north curve a bit further long to the left had closed as long ago as 1962. Both are now overgrown.
