A blue plaque https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5666956 inside the station records that the Shrewsbury & Chester Railway (S&CR) which opened on November 4th 1846 served the first station on this site. The S&CR was amalgamated with the Great Western Railway (GWR) in 1854. Between 1909 and 1912 the GWR replaced the original station with the present buildings which are Grade II listed. Restoration of the station was completed in 1998.
