The house in which the memento is located was a VAD Hospital for Officers in the Great War. The hospital opened on the 10th August 1915 with 46 beds and had, by the time it closed, on February 15th 1919 admitted some 2087 patients, the third highest in the country. Horses were stabled in the rear of the premises and the patients were known to go for a gentle ride up and down the road to get some fresh air once they were well enough. The commandant, Mrs. L.F. Mahon was awarded the OBE for her services in 1920. Miss K. Bullard received the "mention" from the Secretary of State for War, Mr Winston Churchill whose signature appears on the back. I am indebted to the owner for allowing me to photograph the house and the "mention".
