The narrow gauge mineral railway was built in 1915 to replace an underground waggonway connecting the mines of Eston and Chaloner near Guisborough. The waggonway had become unstable due to mining works. The line was operated by three stationary 300hp electric motors. The concrete plinth on the left could well have supported one of these motors at a point where the railway takes a sharp bend.
