A model of Georgian rectitude, "the finest late C18 house ... in Brighton". Originally built for Samuel Shergold in 1765, it owes its present appearance to Robert Adam's remodelling of 1786 for William Hamilton MP. Grade I listed. Its recent history has been difficult, including long periods of disuse and an allegedly negligent and recalcitrant owner. While superficially dazzling, its current sparklingly white (painted) appearance is a world away from the building's original stucco, as well as possibly damaging, and was applied without the requisite listed building consent.
