St John the Evangelist church was completed in 1841 and originally seated 1,100 seater worshippers. A Union workhouse also existed in this area (previously known as Spittlegate) in former times. London Road lies behind the eastern end of the church and the town's railway station is a 5 minute walk away behind the photographer.
