Bridleway across Bale Hill

This bridleway is thought to be part of an ancient track linking Fountains Abbey with some of its granges and mines in Nidderdale. The fact that the hill is named as 'Bale Hill' would suggest that this may have been the site of medieval open-air furnaces for the roasting of lead ore won from mines in the nearby dale, and transported this way towards the abbey.
