Most of the salt works’ buildings were made of metal; including the salt pans, parts of the steam engines, crushing mills, door hinges and the columns and girders that held up the floors. The salty atmosphere caused these to corrode and they required frequent repairs. The smithy was built around 1900; until 1960, all repairs and maintenance were carried out on-site by a smith and a joiner who worked here.
