In the classical style, this is regarded as one of the finest stations in the country. The station was designed by James Pigott Pritchett. The foundation stone was laid on 9 October 1846 and it was completed in 1850. It was extended behind the frontage with island platforms, subway and an overall roof in 1866. In the foreground is the statue of Harold Wilson, arguably the town's most famous son.
