The Northern Bowling Club was formed in 1925 behind a pub in Appletongate called The Northern Hotel. Unfortunately the owners (i.e. the brewery concerned) decided to sell the pub in 1990, plus the bowling green. The club then negotiated a new lease with the builder of the new Newark indoor bowls centre who had also built a new outdoor green to attract summer bowlers. The rent for the lease however, proved too heavy at £600 per year and after several rent increases during the ensuing years it was decided to look for other premises. After a number of meetings with Newark Council relating to the poor standard of local bowling greens, this club agreed a lease that seemed beneficial to all bowlers. In addition to taking over the management of this green adjacent to Sherwood Avenue Park the management committee also took over control of the London Road bowling green.
