The masonry half-hidden by vegetation in the shade is what remains of Elphinstone Tower, a 15th century tower of rectangular plan. It was remarkable for the large number of mural chambers, passages and stairways which honeycomb its walls.Unfortunately it was badly affected by subsidence and was mostly demolished in 1955, leaving only about 4 metres of walls and the north door.
