The building is built at an angle to the road and was constructed in the 1850s when the road was known as Church Hill. Originally a pub called the Buckingham Arms that operated until around 1905 since when it has been used as a commercial premises of some sort. It is currently an English language school, one of a number that can be found in Brighton.
