The station was opened in 1873 by the Cheshire Lines Committee. It lies on the line from Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Oxford Road via Warrington Central. The main station building on the Liverpool-bound platform was disused for many years in the 1990s, but was re-opened as a pub/restaurant called the Steam House in June 2008.
