Stand on the gloomy platforms of Rotherhithe station, and between trains you can almost hear the ghostly voice of Marc Brunel as he copes with the difficulties of building the Thames Tunnel. This station is a real time capsule - but, to see it, go now, for on 23 December 2007 it will close for 2-3 years as the East London Line is transformed to the East London Railway, and thereby changed out of all recognition.
