At first glance a pretty little cottage, but hidden behind the trees and bushes is the substantial former farm house "Baines" (originally "Baines Farm"), which lent its name to nearby Baines Close which was built on its land. Originally farmed by the Baines family it was once part of the Lexden Park Estate under the ownership of George Henry Errington. Subsequently owned for many years by the Clarke family, before being sold to the Colchester cinema pioneer David Agar in 1923.
