The gates are locked to what was once St John's church. One of the earliest and more important churches founded in the Bristol area, its first incarnation was probably from 1000 or so. Over the years, the second version of the church was the victim of Civil War action. The final buildings were created in 1855, at a time when Bristol and the separate area of Bedminster were merging. However, the Blitz put paid to that as incendiaries gutted the structure. Despite the importance of the church, it lay a ruin for many years before being demolished in 1967. Hardly anything remains now.
